THE PROPHECY

Strolling hand in hand, they looked like a golden couple.

The Gypsy’s prophecy was coming true.

Last year, just for fun she had gone into the tent of that Gypsy, who had gazed into the crystal ball & prophesied “You will meet a man & your life will change but….” She could not remember the rest.

A few days later, she had found Richard, lying unconscious, on the beach.

And the rest, as they say, was history…she thought & smiled.

Her reverie was broken.

“Darling, here we are!”

She had not realized that they had walked this far.

She shivered, looking at the gaping mouth of the cavern.

IT looked hungry.

Richard pulled her closer. “Cold?” She nodded, not wanting to spoil his childlike enthusiasm.

.

“Are you okay?” He asked solicitously.

Shrugging off her momentary unease as fanciful imagination, she stepped inside and

  ……..gasped!

My God! Fairies, gnomes, nymphs & all kinds of magical creatures flitted here & there in a beautiful garden.

“Remember, I told you, I belong to another world & you said it did not matter? Well, this is my kingdom.

Will you be my Queen & wear this?”

He held out a beautiful conch, an iridescent tiara sitting on it.

She was speechless with surprise.

Dazed, but with a heart overflowing with love, she bent to pick it up.

“Ouch!” Blood oozed from her hand & fell on the tiara.

The tiara became black & glowed! She screamed.

Hearing an evil laugh, she whirled around.

Richard was turning into a dark, evil looking monster in front of her eyes!

He sneered, “Foolish mortal! I only needed a Virgin’s blood. Now, I & my kind can rule for another century!”

Her delicate senses were assailed by the dank, rotting smell of death.

Terrified, she looked around. All magic had disappeared. Ghoulish creatures lurked in shadows. She felt blood draining away as the warning of the gypsy came back to her “…but do not trust the gift of the sea!”

A Moonlight Tryst

Trifextra: Week Fifty-Two

It’s Friday,so time to do something “extra” at Trifecta. This weekend, they have decided to throw us a googly & send many of us back to school ,for a refresher course in English language:-)

Yes,they want us to give them a 33-word example of personification.  Wait.  What?  You forget what that is?  It’s the practice of attaching human traits and characteristics with inanimate objects, phenomena and animals (http://literary-devices.com).

Well, here comes my submission-ignore the blush please;-)

A Moonlight Tryst

Velvet night kissed me as I stepped into the garden. Gentle breeze embraced me. Flowers smiled knowingly. Stars winked .Trees beckoned. Leaves whispered.

Then, the Moon beamed, announcing the arrival of my lover.

THE KISS

He had just switched off the lights, when he heard her come in.

No! Not tonight! He was so not in the mood for this!

His body tensed.

Every night, for the last one month, this had been going on-ever since he had………

Well, what could he have done? He had no option, did he?

And, of course, what no one knew, could not harm anybody, could it?

But, she was getting bolder.

He had to do something about this soon!

He could see her silhouette outlined at the foot of the bed.

Ugh! She looked ghastly.

He could sense her derision & this angered him.

She could not possibly be laughing at him?

She moved under the cover of darkness.

He could feel her breathing down his neck, as was her wont.

Then it started.

The moaning-the groaning….the moist noises. The heavy breathing…

Tonight, the crescendo rose higher than ever.

He almost died of embarrassment, wondering if his neighbors could hear all this.

What a Bitch this was getting to be!

Then he felt her move over him & went cold.

He could almost see her pale face, bending over to kiss him.

The kiss of death?

NO, NO!!His mind screamed, like a warning bell gone berserk.

He sprang out of the bed, shouting, “No way, you are getting near me now! You are dead! I killed you! Leave me alone!”

As if in reply, he heard her fading laugh, slowly disappearing down the hallway.

He trembled.

Why, oh why had he buried her body in the house after murdering her.

He should have known better.

That interfering, clingy, wretch of a woman who had made his life a living hell, was not going to leave him even after death!

God!Was he doomed to live with the resident ghost of his wife for the rest of his life?

A low moan escaped his lips as he collapsed on the bed. He could not think anymore…..

CROWNING MR.IDLE

Miss Guilt sulked in a corner.

Ms.Work was running late, trying to be everywhere at one and the same time.

Mrs. Diligence looked harassed.

Mr. Muck twiddled his thumbs, looking lost.

Master Boredom was feeling abandoned.

Baby Pleasure was lying curled up, dying an unnatural death.

Mr. Useful looked exhausted.

——————————————————————————————————————-

In Hell, things were getting out of hand.

Devil was breathing fire & brimstone.

“No empty minds?” he roared.

His workshop was gathering dust.

Worse, his minions had not been able to ensnare any souls –again!

——————————————————————————————————————-

In Heaven, things were no better

An emergency meeting had been called by God.

The many listless & tired souls, entering Heaven, were sucking the joy & happiness away!

Saint Peter stood at the Pearly Gates, mopping his brow nervously.

Heaven had no vacancy!

——————————————————————————————————————-

An ordinary weekend conversation………………….

Work: Humans worship me.

Guilt (slyly): Without me, they would crumble.

Boredom: I provide the fuel for mischief & entertainment.

Idle: Without me, where would you all be?

Pleasure (petulantly): But, they love me the most!

Muck: Nonsense! Without me, you are nothing!

Idle: Hello, it’s me who promotes you all!

Work: Ha! Ha! Listen to this fool!

Diligence(haughtily): True! With you around, nothing is accomplished. They need me the most.

Idle: Oh, yeah?

Success: Just shut up, Idle! What do you know anyway?

Idle: Better than you!

Useful: (sneering): Says who? You are good for nothing!

Idle: Watch it…

Work: Oh, get lost! We don’t need you.

Idle (fuming): Is that so? Fine! Am leaving-forever!

And Idle had left.

That was a year ago.

And now they were all paying the price……..

——————————————————————————————————————-

Meanwhile, on Earth ___

People were trudging tiredly. Working diligently day & night for the last one year had brought success to them but they had no idle moment for enjoyment.

There was no pleasure, no time for even boredom! They wanted to muck around & feel guilty but had no idleness left. They hated it……….

                                                 ————-X—————–

I wrote this fictional scenario because I feel that being diligent & hard working is a little overvalued .On the other hand,a little idleness is somehow looked upon as a sin.Why should they  be placed at such  extreme polarities?Isn’t a mix of  business & idleness more desirable?Remember that old adage,”All work & no play…”& without a little idleness, one cannot enjoy  leisure.Possibly,I have not used the third meaning, but had fun doing this-so please consider this as a product of an IDLE mind  >:o

They were going to have a baby.

THE GIFT

Martha hummed to herself, smiling .She was proud of the gift she had inherited…

Who would have thought that the local “Spice girl”, with her love for condiments, would one day become such a household name!

 Life was good.

 The door bell rang.

Two Police officers stood there, looking uncomfortable.

“Sorry to bring you this news, Mrs.Rafter, your ex-husband & his wife were found dead.”

“Oh no!” cried Martha,”What happened?’

“Sorry, but we will need to ask you some questions.”

“Please come in.”

“We understand that the house in which they had been living for the last six months was actually yours Madam?”

The Police officer, who looked a little like Brad Pitt, asked Martha.

“Yes, it did but as George & I were getting married, I did not need it any more. So, I decided to give the house to John & Julie as a Wedding gift.”

“That was generous of you, Madam!” said the  older Policeman.

His piercing blue eyes looked disbelieving.

“Well, we did not part on acrimonious terms officer & loving someone is not a crime,” smiled Martha.”It’s cold outside, could I interest you both in some coffee & cinnamon flavored biscuits?”

They thawed visibly.

“On the face of it, it seems they ate some wild mushrooms that poisoned them,” offered the Brad Pitt look-alike,sipping the coffee.

“Oh, that’s sad. Julie never could cook!”

“These biscuits are delicious” said the older Officer, his blue eyes smiling.

A week later, the Coroner’s office  returned the verdict-Death  due to consumption of   poisonous wild mushrooms.

Reading this, Martha smiled. thinking of a particular condiment in a spice jar, that her ex-husband must have sprinkled generously everyday ,on the bland food served by Julie, the inept cook.

The Police, of course would never find that empty jar, which she had disposed off, when she went to see Julie with her gift of wild mushrooms-a red herring, she chuckled.

It had never been her intention to let her “gift” go to waste.
