Ligo Haibun -Mirror

Ligo Haibun Challenge: 08/11-14/11

The Līgo Haibun Challenge is hosted by Ye Pirate and Ese.

This week the the hosts have offered us two word prompts -“Mirror” and “Faery” and we have to choose one.My choice is Mirror.

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

As I journey on in this life, I catch myself looking back more often than before. The rear-view mirror of my soul reflects so much I have learnt, enjoyed, lost and shed tears on that I find it difficult to take my eyes off it. The more I age, the more my eyes stray to it ,reflecting back images that somehow look larger than life-closer than the present, clearer than what I can see –in my future.

This quirkiness of mine made me introspect, wondering if it is a natural corollary of ageing or is it just nostalgia hitting this spring chicken-you know old wine being displayed in a new bottle? After all packaging is important for a successful sale! Maybe, my heart yearns to be young again-well, the body too, ha! ha!

Childhood has a fragrant innocence that we remember only wisps of –too ephemeral to be contained in our memory except as stray strands of grey hair that seem to appear overnight and startle us in the mornings. Youth, as we all know is fleet –footed and is gone even before we have fully realized it’s potential. To most of us youth is that glass of elusive elixir that we have just dared to take a sip or two from before it is snatched away from us, making us wish that we could have tasted some more!

Ah, but I digress. All this introspection brought home the point that the soul’s mirror just reflects what we want to see. I admit, travelling on the road of life, we need to look back at times ,for  it gives us an idea of our bearings, filling us with a sense of achievement or purpose to see how far we have come .  However, just like we cannot keep looking into the rear –view mirror of a vehicle while driving and have to focus our attention ahead on the road to avoid accidents and keep moving ahead, so in life we need to keep our  eyes on the here and now. We cannot forget that we need to take in the passing scenery and enjoy it too. Life is a journey –each phase unique-to be lived fully.

Wiping the dust off all the mirrors that make my soul, I am determined to make the best of this life with a spring in my step. So what if it is the autumn of my life? I believe that just like the spring and summer of my life were beautiful, the coming seasons will make me richer in experience too. Can you hear me laughing and saying, “Bring them on?”

Life mirrors longing

soul twists twirls -in nostalgia

lessons learnt, move on

  1. I like your image of the rear-view mirror showing us our past, and when we are looking in it, we can’t be looking forward or enjoying our present. Lots of good images there! Brenda

  2. the twist and turns we go through in life and you are right, we must keep our eyes looking forward or else… 🙂 the haiku finishes your words perfect. thank you.

  3. You ooened a great comparative look and expounded on it very well in a very natural style that makes the reader take a pause for thought. Entertaining too, in a nice, relaxed style, though the topic is rofound. Very well done.

    • Thank you Managua-glad you think so:-)Missing your effervescence -why so quiet or is it just my imagination running away with me?Hope all is well and you are just caught up with life:-)

      • sorry – just publishing a novel..well,about to publish it, so caught up in it just editing and checking everything…please don’t use my rudeness as a reason for leaving Ligo!!
